His loss had left me floundering for any little thing to hold onto, but the walls around me were too slick, too smooth for me to stop the freefall I was currently in.
I hadn’t quite hit rock bottom yet, but I knew that when I did, I would be stuck at the bottom of the deepest well in existence, surrounded by an impenetrable darkness that was so infinite that not even I could see through. I squeezed my eyes together tighter as I imagined my endless, desperate clawing at the walls that would only lead to my fingers being worn down to nubs, but still, I would scratch at them, needing to get out.
