Shelves rose in endless rows, climbing up five floors, the highest disappearing into dim shadows above. Staircases wound upward like careful spirals, while tall ladders leaned against the shelves, waiting for curious hands. Each section bore a bold sign, neatly marking the knowledge it held. “There must be a fortune in books here,” I whispered, almost afraid my voice might disturb something sacred.

Kael looked up. The shelf was one of the tall outer wall units, floor to ceiling, packed tightly with old volumes. It had a slight lean to it that he had not noticed when he sat down. As he watched, it groaned again, and a faint creak ran up the wood from the base. Kael stood up slowly. The shelf leaned further. He took one step to the left. The shelf toppled. Not toward him. Toward the walkway railing on the other side, which it struck with a heavy crash that sent the railing's iron supports bending outward. Books cascaded in every direction. The sound was enormous in the quiet library. Several lamps swung on their hooks. Someone on the lower floor shouted in alarm.

"Sure, let me just grab it for you real quick, sir." She quickly walks over to her bookshelf, reaching up high to grab the file. Suddenly, the bookshelf shakes and tilts over. Outside, I caught faint outlines of a small treehouse, a wooden swing, and a narrow path that disappeared into the trees. The low chairs looked carelessly placed but somehow aesthetic. In the far corner, a tall, slim wooden shelf stood filled with random books: a few classics, a couple of old thrillers, and— I stopped. I tilted my head and moved closer.

It had six shelves on it, divided in the middle as it was two different bookcases. That was in total eight-hundred tiers, that would have to be glanced over. This was not counting the items that were at the base of the walls on pedestals and also the items hung on the walls. ….
