Following her lead, I pick the card closest to me, flipping it open. It reveals an ace of kings? “Who wins?” I asked “On one, we keep playing until someone wins” “Okay, so it’s your turn now?” She nods and flips open a card. It reviles a six of diamonds causing me heart to jump “Did you win?” I asked pointing at the previous card she upturned “No, but close” “But it’s the same color” the five of hearts and six of diamonds were both red colored “Yes, but the shape has to be the same not just color”

a more elderly man agreed until they were all talking angrily amongst themselves. “Gentleman, Gentleman!" I called. “Edric was a cruel man indeed, but does that mean we repay him with the same cruelty? He has been merciless to me among many during his rule, but I will NOT allow any man to starve into a slow and painful death, no matter his crimes. That is not who we are, and we will not respond to ruthlessness with that of our own! We WILL be better than that. Better than the example he led by.” I waited a moment before I continued to allow what I said to sink in and to watch the response on their faces. But so far, it seemed they all understood my reasoning.

His knuckles whiten around the mug. “Rule four: if I decide this arrangement is over before the year is up (any reason, no reason), I leave. No negotiation. No penalties. You never speak my name again.” I sit back, fold my hands in my lap like a queen. “Rule five,” I finish, soft and lethal, “if you break any of my rules, I will burn everything you’ve built to the ground and salt the earth so thoroughly nothing ever grows again. Starting with your reputation. Then your bank accounts. Then you.”

At the far end was a massive red door. "Attention, players!" the voice boomed again. "Processing is complete. You are now four thousand players ready to begin THE SURVIVAL GAME!" The crowd murmured nervously. "Let me explain the rules," the voice continued. "You will compete in games for forty days. Each day is one round, and each round, players will be eliminated. The last player standing after forty days wins the grand prize: you get to return to your life, and you get one wish granted. Anything you desire!"

It slows right in front of me, and for a second, I think it’s going to stop. Maybe hitchhiking is a better idea than waiting for a cab. I step toward the street—and then it accelerates. The tire sinks into a puddle, and a mix of water and mud explodes straight at me, ruining my immaculate skirt. “Damn idiot! Are you blind or what?” I shout, furious, trying to see the jerk hiding behind the tinted window. The window rolls down slowly. Shamelessly. A long arm appears first. The sleeve of a black suit fits it perfectly, revealing a small but impossible-to-ignore tattoo on his wrist: a Roman numeral five.

She flipped through it slowly, eyes scanning the rules again. Rule 3: Weakness is not tolerated. Rule 7: Personal disputes must be settled in the ring. Rule 9: Hierarchy is earned through combat, obedience, and demonstration of strength. Her heart beat steadily. Not fast. Not slow. Focused. She pressed a hand to her chest—bound flat—and closed her eyes.

Judging by how it wasn't on the map, this safe zone should help him tide through the rough opening school ceremony. "If I recall correctly, there are five rules in Godfather High. Rule one, no killing in safe zones and during safe time periods. Rule two, the microchip in our necks allow us to redeem certain benefits using credits earned in the game. It also kills us if we die. Rule three, No harming the creepy invigilators. Rule four, if you escape, you die. Lastly, the shitty game of death ends only when one survivor is left or if all the dungeon floors are cleared. I definitely lucked out this round."

"Uhm, okay whatever. Rule one: discretion. Rule two: no one can know about us. Rule three: no special treatment regarding grades. Rule four: do you still want me to call your Sir all the time or?-" "Continue." He interrupted my train of thoughts. His voice was both stern and comforting. I chuckled. "Rule five: minimum contact during working hours..." I trailed off, knowing he'd comment something. "Exactly. Continue, you're not finished." I puffed. "Rule six: wait, what was it about? You not always getting the upper hand?" He chuckled. "Yeah, and we followed that, unfortunately." Then, he finished off the list for me. "And finally, number eight, the safe word."

“Zach, she just humiliated the school's heartthrob and one of the school's top ten, and your saying she's on fire instead of shes in fire cause hell yeah she's gonna be getting em hates” “Wait… is this some high school cliche I thought we were past that”. “Well in this school..you aren't past anything you just annoyed the top 1 of the school”. “Top 1?..what's that”. Mira and Zach exchange glances. “You tell her” Zach said. “Well the school has a system, top 10 and 20…top 10 are the high class they rule the school and they make the rules only after Axel approves them. “And whose Axel??”
