She stepped to the back of the van, then snatched the knife from my hand. “You high-ranking cowards,” she said bitterly. “None of you have the stomach for what needs to be done. That’s why the rogues will soon rule over all the kingdom. You lot will run crying away before you’d even stab someone.” There was a cold malice in Ruth’s eyes that I hadn’t noticed before. She’d shown love for her daughter before, and some patience for the rest of us, even if we annoyed her. But this was different. Her eyes now were those of a killer – frozen, detached.

“What’s the matter? Too soft?” Laughter rippled through the hall. I forced my hand still, forcing steel into my voice. “Ruthless doesn’t mean senseless. A thief doesn’t deserve the same death as a murderer.” Gasps. Murmurs. The hall erupted in whispers. Selene’s eyes burned, her smile slipping. “You dare question our laws?” I met her gaze head-on. “I follow the Alpha’s orders. Not yours.” The silence cracked like lightning. Selene’s lips curled, her composure splintering for just a heartbeat before she smoothed it back into place.

Ruth stood in front of her brother and crossed her arms. "I would say let her go through what she put Jackie through but I am not evil like her. I would never wish my enemy to go through what I went through as an assaulted person. Maddy doesn't deserve any pity from us," Ruth said and dropped her hands. He muttered under his breath, “You want to kill Calvin and the hunters… are you really going to do it?” “Yes,” Ruth said, emotionless yet firm. “Can you not… for Alex’s sake?” Roy asked hesitantly. “I did… and I almost died. That feeling wasn’t pleasant. It’s either I die, or they do,” Ruth replied. “Alex… make a choice,” she said, glancing toward him from behind Ray.

Naomi said tauntingly. “Stop blackmailing me!” Ruth's hand met naomi's face in a very resounding slap. Her five fingerprints showed boldly on her face.
