The sound grew louder. Then I saw it. My old phone. The spare one I lost at school. The one I thought was gone forever. It sat on the counter. Lit up. Vibrating. I froze. Ryder cursed under his breath and moved faster, grabbing the phone before the call ended. He turned it so I could see the screen. Unknown number. The call stopped. Then immediately started again. Ryder hesitated only a moment before answering it and putting it on speaker. The line crackled.

The itch is scratched, but the mark remains. Ryder finishes washing the soap and sweat from his body, then turns off the water. He steps out onto the bathmat, grabbing a plush towel. He rubs it roughly over his hair, drying the dark strands, when the sharp ring of his phone cuts through the humid silence. He grabs the device from the counter, water dripping from his elbows onto the screen. Maya. He rolls his eyes so hard it hurts. He swipes to answer, putting the phone to his ear. Without saying a word, he placed it on speaker. For a second, there was nothing but static. Then a voice spoke. “Did you enjoy your wedding gift?” the caller asked mockingly.

Fingers snapped to his phone, thumb jabbing contacts. The line connected after one ring. A deep voice rumbled, "Brown." "You have work," Ryan barked, voice steel. "Keep eyes on someone.
