I thought it was my fear overwhelming me, or a trick of the light. Like when you stare at a light, and it burns an image on your retina when the light is gone. Something like that. But now I realize the shadow figures I saw tonight and after our date, were exactly the same as they were that night, and the next. All night, both nights, it felt like those shadows were living beings, creeping around me. It felt like I was being swallowed up by the darkness. “Let’s explore! I want to see what’s inside.” As they approached the cabin, the door hung slightly ajar, creaking ominously as if inviting them in. Jace felt a rush of excitement mixed with a hint of apprehension. “Be careful, everyone. We don’t know what’s inside.” They entered the cabin cautiously, flashlights illuminating the dusty interior. The air was thick with the scent of old wood and forgotten memories. Cobwebs hung in the corners, and the floorboards creaked beneath their feet. Each volume of Strange short stories will have 3 medium-sized stories and about 10 short stories. To make it easier to understand and more transparent, this chapter will be like a summary for this and the following volumes. Even now the shadows in my room play havoc with my subconscious, so I turn the light on and sleep with one eye open. Also, when my computer starts to go on the fritz just as I write a particularly spooky part of a story, I chuck it up to chance and swallow a little harder before checking to make sure that I have only one shadow. It’s amazing that I still get so scared as an adult. You sure would have thought that for someone who makes a living scaring people, I would know better, right?

Tony said, mocking me. The rusted old cabin I had been taken to was tucked away in a secluded part of the woods, far from the prying eyes of anyone who might hear my screams. The air was thick with the musk of pine trees and the earthy smell of the forest floor, both foreign and terrifying at this moment.

Or if the weather was on the colder side, we’d sit deep within the woods hurtled around a warm campfire, marshmallows burning and scary stories flowing allowed tears to well in my eyes. Back then some story of a monster hiding in a cabin ready to eat people was the most frightening thing I had heard, but I was unaware of the real nightmare I would be faced with, I didn’t have a monster in a cabin hunting me, but a real life monster who was sat around that once happy campfire.

“Do you think it’s haunted?” My breath sticks in my chest at her words. Before I can say anything, Jack laughs. “Don’t be stupid. Of course it isn’t haunted.” “Some people think it is,” I counter. “There have always been stories about this place, about the swamp.” The woman pauses as an uneasy shadow flickers across her delicate features. “What kind of stories?” she presses. Jack once again cuts me off. “Who gives a shit?” he chuckles. “Ghosts, witches, werewolves–that’s all kid stuff. The only thing we should be afraid of is the IRS.”
