They are just dark shapes standing on the grey sand. I take one step to the left. The shadows move with me. Thirty dark shapes shift at the exact same second. "Get away," I whisper. The shadows do not answer. They glide closer. I look at the silver water. Shadows do not like reflections. They do not like the light on the waves. If I touch the water, they will leave. I run toward the surf. My feet hit the wet sand. I plunge my right foot into the cold tide. The shadows vanish instantly. The beach behind me is completely empty.

A shadow lunged from behind a floating book, aiming at Winter. “Winter!” I screamed. Fenrir reacted instantly, slashing the figure mid-air, but the impact sent him stumbling backward. The shadow rolled, vanishing into another corner. “Too fast,” Oragon muttered, drawing his sword. “They’re trained more than ordinary spies.” I felt my hands tremble. The book at my hip pulsed faintly, reacting to the danger. I placed my palms against it, and a soft white glow radiated outward, forcing the shadow back.

He whispered against my ear. A shiver of excitement ran through me which immediately released my hold on him. “Good girl.” He whispered before kissing my neck. I drifted off to sleep before Damian returned. Small waves lapped against the sand as I stood watching them. The sound of wildlife around me filled my ears. The waves swooshed louder and became bigger. Quickly swishing passed my ankles and sent ice cold waves through me. I tried to back away but I was held in place. The sand was swallowing up my feet and holding me in place. I tried to thrash and pull my way out, but I couldn’t move. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
