"Did you hear about the witch at the werewolf execution?" one mage whispered to his friend. "They say she grew dragon wings and disappeared. The Alpha King is furious. He has patrols out everywhere." I kept my face blank and walked past them. My heart beat faster. Kael really was not giving up. Good thing I looked nothing like the girl they burned at the stake.

"They will get answers." "And the pack?" "They will get justice." Kade looked at me and his voice was quiet. "She is a witch." "I know." "She was avenging Salem." "I know." "She is not going to stop." I looked at the dark trees and the falling snow and the sky. "I know," I said. The walk back to the academy was long and the snow was deep and the silence was heavy. I thought about the witch and her black eyes and her sharp smile. I thought about Salem and the betrayal and the wolves who had turned their backs. I thought about Cressida and her dark hair and her dark eyes and the way she looked at me like I was something precious.

A cruel smile spread across her face. “Today is your lucky day,” she purred, dragging a long, yellowed nail down my jawline. “I don’t feel like eating you… But your friend—” her gaze flicked toward Beth, who was frozen in horror at the foot of the basement stairs, “—she’s definitely on my menu tonight.” My eyes widened. “No! Please!” I begged. The witch only laughed, a bone-chilling cackle that echoed off the stone walls. And then—she vanished, her form melting into the darkness like smoke.

The third witch smiled at Octavia, and Octavia smirked. “So how do I take her power for mine?” No. I whispered, running to Octavia, but I washed pushed back by the third witch who wasn’t even looking over here. “It’s easy, my queen. Just take that potion, and bite her wrist and drink in her life force. That would both give you her power, and kill her.” Octavia's eyes gleamed with excitement as she reached for the potion. Amelia, realizing what was happening, let out a cry of horror and tried to run to Valerie, but the third witch held her back.

But here, the wolves already guessed the witches might attack. "Lord Alcazar, what are they burying?" Enzo inquired. Enzo, Alcazar, and Adolf are sitting on a tree branch while spying on the witches. They couldn't directly interfere because only Sylvia, Steve, and Creed are strong enough to fight the Witches. The others can only use mushroom bombs, which can only stall the witches, but for a while. Mushroom bombs cannot completely stop the witches. The half-breeds are outnumbered, so a direct attack is more dangerous to the Wolves than the witches.
