"That’s a 'Cleanup' crew." Julian looked at Hope, who was sitting on a sack of grain, her eyes fixed on the approaching ship. She wasn't scared. She looked at Julian, and her voice was a chillingly calm echo of her mother’s. "They're not coming for the grain, Daddy," Hope said. "They're coming for the bird. The 'One Who Remains'... he’s on that ship. And he wants his soul back."

Then Hope’s voice echoed through the speakers. “I won’t stay quiet.” The sound hit Selena like a physical blow. Hope. Actually Hope. Alive. Speaking. The room froze. Richard looked almost amused. “She was very determined.” The audio continued. Hope’s voice sounded angry. Fierce. Fearless. “They’re using people.” Silence. “They’re choosing vulnerable contestants deliberately.” Another pause. Then Hope said something that made every person in the villa go still. “If something happens to me, it’s because I found the truth.”

"Hope's not okay. Hope's gone. Nothing else matters." "Hope matters. You matter. We'll find her. We'll get her back. I promise." "You can't promise that. Nobody can promise that. She's in their hands now. The conspiracy has her. Everything we feared. Everything we tried to prevent. It happened anyway." Hailey was silent. Processing. Dealing with failure. With impossible choice's consequences. With reality that neither decision had been right. "How many?" I asked. "How many civilians did you save by choosing them over Hope?"

It was impossible to not be moved by her expression that was filled with immense suffering and torment, yet tinged with a glimmer of hope.

I really felt like I had actually lost my legs forever. Turning my head to the side, I spotted Dylan staring at me intensely on the couch. I was still confused as to why he was even here in the first place. "Did Aiden land safely?" I asked, fear gripping my heart. The boy was only 16 and the winds had been pretty strong that day. I could still remember his screams of terror when I went spiraling to the ground. "He did," he answered and the serious look he gave me was even weirder, "And it's all because of you, thank you. Thank you so much, Hope." His voice was filled with passion, eyes blazing.

“Good luck, Jessie. I hope you find what you’re looking for.” He turned to walk out the door. I shuddered as an unassailable truth hit me. All this time, I had believed that as soon as this nightmare was over, as soon as I had my life back, everything would return to normal. But it wasn’t going to happen. What good was having my life back when I’d lost what mattered most? I had made a horrible mistake! By rejecting Jason, I had thought I was protecting myself when, in reality, I had been causing irreparable harm.
