“Because that’s about justice, about making him pay for everything he’s done, this is just…” I gestured between us, searching for words. “This is just me being selfish and reckless.”
“Maybe you deserve to be selfish for once.”
The words hung between us and I didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to explain that I’d been trained for years to put everyone else first, to smile and nod and sacrifice what I wanted for the good of Alfred’s career, for the family image, for the campaign, and the idea of choosing something just because I wanted it felt foreign and dangerous.
