The epilogue with Kael planting the tree was nice, I guess, but it felt like a band-aid on a much deeper narrative wound. I finished the book and just stared at the wall for ten minutes, feeling cheated.

But when you spend three books establishing a rule-bound universe, breaking those rules for an ‘emotional’ ending feels like a betrayal of the story’s own logic.
