Before I could ask what she meant, a cold wind swept across the clearing. The lake behind us rippled violently, though there was no storm. The moon’s reflection warped — first silver, then black, until the entire surface turned to ink.
Something was rising from the water.
The air grew heavy, thick with a pressure that made it hard to breathe. The Shadowborn dropped to their knees, bowing to whatever was coming.
Edward’s hand found mine. “Stay behind me,” he murmured.
