She pulled her hood tighter, hoping to shield herself from the prying eyes she could already feel on her. She sighed, remembering the last town, the last school, the last narrow escape. The coven was always a step behind her, their sinister intentions cloaked in shadow but ever-present. She couldn’t afford to grow attached, couldn’t afford to make friends or enemies. But she knew this routine all too well. Blend in, keep your head down, and move on before anyone gets too close.

Inside sat a shard of obsidian wrapped in bone thread, glowing faintly with runes older than time. “This is the Rune of anchor.” she let out slowly. “It will slow the merging, and create a tether between the shadow and something living.”

Jarek shifts mid-leap, tearing into the shadows, but they’re endless. “Run!” Ryland barks, grabbing Selene’s arm. We sprint through the crumbling fortress, the shadows closing in. Selene clutches the shard, her glow flickering. “We’re not going to make it,” she gasps. “Yes, we are,” I growl, shifting to shield her. I pulled up a shadow shield, having the ghoul crash right into it. I wrapped the shield around him, squeezing him in the shadow cocoon it created until he popped like a cheery. There were still a few more. I could feel it, and it felt like the number was growing. My eyes met Andy’s in a panic, she held the same anxious look on her face. “Run,” she barely whispered.

Instead of running away I froze like a deer in the headlights as that shadow started moving toward me. “S-stop. Please.” He didn’t. And somehow, I was afraid of this shadow more than the man lying unconscious behind me. Finally, my muscles unlocked and I turned around ready to run back to the house. It’s not far — an old abandoned warehouse complex on the edge of neutral territory, about forty minutes from here if you move fast.” A map flared to life on the largest screen, a red pulsing dot marking the spot. Zephyr swiped again, and a series of complex glowing runes appeared beside it. “These are the counter-rune sequences,” he continued. “Activate them in order near the site, and the veil should weaken enough for you to feel the children clearly and breach the perimeter without triggering the kill-switch.
