She opens her mouth, probably to ask me more, but before she can speak—shadows shift among the trees.
Two soldiers emerge.
Their armor catches the faint light of the moon as they step onto the path, swords drawn.
I freeze. The mark on my face feels like it’s on fire, alive, as if the curse itself is responding to their presence.
