He took a step forward, heart leaping. “Mom—don’t go, please—”
But the sunlight dimmed. The air thickened. Dark clouds rolled across the meadow, swallowing the light. His mother’s figure began to blur, fading like mist until only her gown remained—dropped on the grass, soaked red with blood.
