Chapter 19A: Shadows Closing In The city’s heartbeat had changed. Streets that once carried the mundane rhythm of daily life now pulsed with unseen eyes and invisible threats. Rain had returned, light but persistent, dripping from fire escapes and neon signs onto glistening asphalt. Every puddle reflected not just light, but the sense of surveillance, a reminder that nothing—no alley, no corner, no building—was truly safe.

I closed my eyes and tilted my head back, waiting for the blow to come. But then, a sound cut through the rain—a loud, bone-chilling howl that sent the rogues scrambling. My eyes snapped open, and I turned to see the shadows shifting behind the trees.

No umbrella—of course. I pull up my hoodie, shove my hands in my pockets, and hunch against the rain. The streets are slick, streetlights blooming into fuzzy orange halos, puddles mirroring the neon chaos. Pedestrians hustle by with umbrellas, but I just walk, letting the patter drum on my hood.

After getting tired of fighting the magic, he’d retreated to his favourite place in his head. And Ava had joined him there. Could it be? He ran out of the parking lot as he stripped his clothes off. Shadow was much faster than a car, and he didn’t care that it was broad daylight. He didn’t even bother going through the woods as he would have usually done. Their fear, their little screams as he barrelled towards them, didn’t bother him either.

I turn to follow him so I can eat, but before I can I send a glare towards the machine. "Ha, you got cock-blocked by a machine," Shadow says in my head "Shut up, don't act like you're not upset that we were interrupted either" I reply to him and shut off our link when I hear him huff knowing that he agrees with what I said. I smile at the rain when I sit down and grab a fork and start to eat. "So?" Rain asks, leaning on his hand that is resting on the island.

A curtain fluttered, revealing the shape of Manny in the light, watching him. Which side of the game is she on? he asked himself Then he stepped out into the rain, dropping a long shadow across the puddles. The hunt was on again

Mixulla rapidly aged, transforming into a dried corpse right before their eyes. After completing that task, Chad looked at the deep pit in the middle of the hall and jumped in. The pit was enormous; Chad fell for a full half-minute before reaching the bottom. When he did, he was stunned. Thousands of hedgehogs filled the labyrinthine passages below.

I felt hopeful that regardless of the hells fire within me, I could resist the urge and stay within the light. I look out into the bleak weather, my eyes drifting to a dark Silhouette in the distance. I couldn’t make out any features, the rain distorting everything, but I knew that it was the strange man that I had met in the woods. Lysander.

The blood on the floor had half-dried, indicating that she had been lying here for a while. The sound of rain outside grew louder. Looking out the window, I saw that the flooding had risen, and the water flow was becoming more turbulent. It was impossible for me to bring the unconscious Hilda back to the Packhouse now. The floodwater was slowly seeping in through the broken window.

Ice asks. “A witch I met in New Orleans,” Bo replies with a smile. Seems like more than a friend to me. “She’ll meet you at the airport when you land in Portland. From there, it’s about a six and a half hour drive to Crescent Shadow territory.” I nod my head. Ice sees my face and turns to them. “Can we go now?” She asks. “Of course,” Gray nods his head. “Get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day, you’ll need your rest.”
