Lira lay on the ground, her spear broken beside her, a black tendril coiled around her good arm. The shadow loomed over her, a mass of roiling darkness, its edges flickering like fire.
“Elara, run!” Lira screamed, but the tendril tightened, and she cried out as her skin began to turn gray.
Elara didn’t run. She held the vial high, letting the flame grow brighter. “Over here, you bastard!”
The shadow whipped toward her, its form stretching into a clawed hand that reached for Ellie. But Ellie screamed, a high, clear sound, and a burst of golden light erupted from her—burning the shadow’s tendril to ash.
