The witches closed in, their laughter echoing like a chorus of nightmares. Something inside Aqua snapped. A surge of dark energy, unfamiliar and terrifying, welled up within her. She felt her pendant grow hot against her skin, the clear crystal turning black as smoke. The air around her crackled with raw power as she turned back towards the attackers, her fear morphing into a blinding rage.

The footsteps were familiar, even before I turned around. “Kai,” I said, not bothering to look at him. “We have a problem,” he said, his voice tight. I finally turned to face him. Kai’s face was lined with tension, and his jaw set in that grim way that told me whatever news he brought was worse than usual. I raised an eyebrow, waiting. “The shadow hunters,” he continued, “they’re moving into the lower cities. Faster than they have ever done.”

King Luca I couldn't hear anyone speaking to me as I hurried to where the screams were coming from. Pero and Antonio were right behind me, and soon we got to downtown, where the attack was happening. He laughed, taunting me. “Go on. I dare you. Do your worst.” I tilted my head. “As you wish.” I didn’t even have to signal. The clearing erupted into a total disorder. Bodies collided; the sound of fists hitting the enemy’s flesh; the snarls of wolves filling the air.
