Not literally, but the sand fractures like a mirror. It opens at my feet and tendrils of the shadow claw up, wrapping around ankles, wrists, throats. They pull like they’re pulling into an ocean of night. One by one, fighters stumble. Shouts turn to curses and then to pained howls.
A wolf close by, a young male Sylvian fighter, tries to scream. The shadow slides up his throat and he stops, eyes glazing until he falls forward like a marionette on rotten strings. The shadow drinks.
