Between Shadow and Moonlight The night of the Council would be remembered as the night the air itself trembled. For a heartbeat, the grand hall had been alive with hope — howls of unity rising like hymns under the full moon. Then the light had shifted. The silver beams pouring through the roof had twisted, darkened, and shivered into shapes that had no place in this world. Now, silence ruled. Lyra’s eyes were fixed on the center of the room where the moonlight had just flared and dimmed. The torches burned erratically, shadows crawling along the walls like living things. Every instinct inside her screamed danger not physical, but something older. Something that didn’t belong here.

The moon was a thin crescent in the sky, casting just enough light to see the outlines of the estate’s walls. “Mateo’s pushing his luck,” Marco muttered, checking his gun. “You think he’s getting desperate?” “Desperation makes people bold,” Enzo replied, his voice low. “And careless.” Marco smirked. “He must think we’re asleep at the wheel.” “Let’s wake him up,” Enzo said, the cold resolve in his tone unmistakable. He gave a quick set of hand signals to his men, who spread out, taking up positions along the perimeter.

His hands rest at his sides, gloved, as if he’s always ready to strike. I can’t see his face. It’s hidden under the hood of his coat, casting deep shadows that obscure everything but his eyes—sharp and cold, gleaming in the dark. But what catches me, what freezes me in place, are the ropey scars that circle them, uneven and jagged, like someone tried to carve them out and failed. Or maybe something else. I don’t know. Those scars pull tight whenever he blinks, a grotesque reminder of something violent.

"How can you sleep so peacefully with a stranger in your house?" He noticed the way her hair fell over her face like a curtain of silky locks. The dim light of the moon streaming through the window casted a glow on her smooth, unblemished skin. He watched as her chest rose with each breath she took and how the thin fabric of her gown barely concealed the gentle curves of her body.

Selene’s voice breaks the silence, her tone distant, ethereal. “The moon lady says… *the shadow grows*.” You crouch beside her, brushing her hair back. “What shadow, baby?” She blinks, her silver eyes clearing. “The bad wolves. They’re coming.”

"Moonbound, this is your real test. Everything will end tonight if you don't fully awaken the next species of the Silver Heart." It was like a storm of chains and light came out of me when I took a big breath. The Shadowed Moon moved back, and the liquid silver lit up like it knew I was now in charge. I was scared and my chest hurt, but my will was stronger than my fear. I was going to the moon. I would stay alive. The Shadowed Moon was bigger, darker, and smarter than ever when it pulsed again. I was sure of one scary fact: It was just starting to take shape.

A low hum vibrated beneath my palms — soft at first, like the purr of distant thunder, then stronger, deeper, alive. My breath hitched as I lifted my head. Around me, the darkness moved. Shadows. Dozens of them. They weren’t still — they rippled, stretched, reached toward me like strands of liquid night. The moonlight bent around them as if afraid to touch them. I froze, my instincts screaming to run — but my body refused to move. The shadows circled me, swirling like smoke caught in a silent wind, and then — slowly — they drew closer. My tears caught in my throat as I watched one of them hover near my hand, brushing against my skin like a whisper.

And far above, the Moon shone brighter, silver light touching the valley with a quiet warning. The shadows of home had returned. And they were waiting.

Z smiled at her, waving her hand a little enthusiastically than she intended. Once alone, both of them gave each other an encouraging smile. “You sure this is the core of this school?” Kleint had his right on his brows, squinting at the horizon, which was now heavily tinted with indigo, some of the stars making their appearance, along with waxing crescent moon, casting a long shadow in the field, broken only by the flattering fireflies, though their lights weren’t that bright. It was enough for Z to glimpse the pity state of the Shadowests.

The moon shows its soft light on the world as I walk the streets. I listen to your voice as you call out to your friends who are leaving your party to return to their homes. The light of the full moon catches your face and I see its beauty from down below. I slip into the shadows as your guests pass. You watch them go before turn to return to your room closing the door to the balcony that you were just using. You turn up the lamps in the room and pull the drapes closed, but I can still see the shadow of you. In the flash of a thought I stand outside your window looking through the crack of the drapes.
