I recognized them instantly. That was where the Shadow Court was said to dwell—in the forgotten fortress built on the bones of fallen Alphas. My heart pounded. “I’m coming for you,” I murmured, a vow etched into the wind.

Those who usually wandered were now confined; those absent dared not return, like Prunella. Before departing for the southern border, Klein had repeatedly emphasized that no constructions on the northern Shadow Peaks, as he had plans for the land—a five-story observatory tower. It would be a place to admire the moon, train, and serve other purposes. He intended to break ground next New Year's Day but returned to find houses already built on the north side. The north side of Shadow Peaks was at a high elevation, opposite the waterfall. Building houses there was purely for the residents' enjoyment of the scenery.

The peaks loomed in the distance, their snow-capped spires piercing the sky like jagged teeth. Crane led the way, his map clutched tightly in his hands. “The Nexus Core is at the summit of the tallest peak,” he explained. “But the path is treacherous. We’ll need to be careful.” Vivienne smirked. “When are we not?” As they climbed, the group encountered signs of the force’s growing influence. The air grew thick with a faint hum, similar to the fractures they had faced, and shadows seemed to flicker at the edges of their vision. Jamie muttered under his breath, his nerves evident despite his attempts at humor.
