Willow applied pressure to her arm with a piece of paper while Roy gripped the steering wheel tight, his knuckles white. Sierra’s call came in halfway down the road, and she sounded panicky. “Roy, the candle we lit for Melanie in the church is flickering for no reason. I think it’s about to go out. Can you check it out? I’m worried.” Roy slammed the brakes and replied, “I’m heading back. We’re not traveling down the mountain tonight.” Observing the anguish look on Willow’s face, Roy changed his mind. He saw no reason to let Willow have her way.

Time to get going, I guess, she mused as she excused herself from Fenix before taking her leave. Samantha whistled, walking along the small trail that led to the darkened, foggy forest where the Shadow Pack lived. She was happy, humming a lullaby before her acute hearing picked up some noises behind her. Samantha stilled in her walk. Her hair rose at her nape as she felt the disturbance of energy in the small trail.

In the distance, floating miles above the grey desert, was the North. It looked like a jagged, bleeding wound in the sky. The entire mountain range, from the Widow's Peak to the Thorne Fortress, was suspended in a cage of violet energy. It was being pulled upward, slowly, toward the Great Shadow that loomed at the apex of the heavens, the Owner.

A translucent blue holographic map of the high northern ridges bloomed into life above the scarred oak table, casting a cool azure glow over their faces.
