1| The Final Strike The sky was drizzling slightly, weeping over the demise of one of the most glorious empires in the history of shape-shifters. It had been hours since the clouds had turned grey and started dampening the surface. It was the first rain of the monsoon. The soil was soft and muddy and it had soaked up to her knees.

I nodded to Nathan and we both got out of the car slowly, not really sure if we wanted to go in. I stepped over the threshold of the place I called home for the past few months. The once spotless foyer laid out destroyed in front of my eyes. The pristine tile was crumbling under the once majestic chandelier that gravity helped explode on the shining surface. Glass littered the ground that wasn't occupied from other debris. The dark pattern of a wolf and moon was almost indistinguishable by now.

The Empire's Ashes The wind, a continual reminder of the fall of the empire, murmured through the ruins. With her leather-clad fingers digging amid the ruins of a once-immensity palace, Zara knelt down. In the early morning light, the tall, hollow and cracked marble columns loomed above her, creating long, skeletal shadows. The smell of smoke, of something long burned and forgotten, filled the air. Even though she had been scrounging here for days, the scene remained the same: rusted weaponry, shattered statues, and the remains of a grandeur that had long since lost its significance.

Her guilt was eating her from the inside out, spiraling further down each passing day. The betrayal nipped at her conscience: she had lied to him, deceived him, and was too cowardly to face the consequences. Worst of all? She still loved him. I tried to make out words and voices, but there was too much going on for much discernment. The commotion was wild and intense, a symphony of grunts, thuds, and muffled shouts that painted a chaotic picture. I could hear furniture scraping across the floor, a lamp crashing to the ground with a shattering of glass, and the unmistakable clatter of bodies hitting the walls. She turned towards him and asked him if there were anything else eye-catching but he said no. Silence filled the room. And he felt a discomfort he had not felt since he entered theplace.

"What? Do you think I'm making this up to scare you?" The warm light from above cast a slanted shadow on the edge of the table. He stared at me, and for once, didn't rush to deny anything. "You broke up with me…because of this?" I almost laughed. "Does it even matter now? Even if I were healthy, I never would have lasted long enough for you to finally turn around and look at me. I overheard your friends talking. Apparently, I wasn't even someone you'd be willing to settle for. I used to think we'd actually make it to the end."

"The rogue alliance has breached the eastern defenses! Buildings are burning! Civilians are fleeing!" "They're demanding your immediate surrender, or they'll slaughter everyone in the city! Alpha, our losses are catastrophic!" "And the West Coast division—the shareholders have already voted you out! The banks have frozen all our accounts!" The call was filled not just with a voice, but with the roar of explosions, the cries of children, the screams of women. It was the sound of an empire collapsing. Fenris gripped the phone, the veins on the back of his hand bulging as his entire body shook.

The embers smoldered, casting flickering shadows across the ruins. Lyla watched the fortress crumble, its stone walls once unbreakable nothing but dust beneath her feet.
