Her mouth trembled like she wanted to speak but couldn’t. “You stood here,” I said, “laughing like you already won. Mocking her. Pouring a drink like this was your party.” I paused. Let my words hang in the air. “You’re not celebrating tonight, Mercy. You’re going to jail.” One of the officers cuffed her roughly. She didn’t resist. She just stared at me like she didn’t know who I was anymore. “You think I’m weak?” I said. “No. I was patient. I waited for the right moment.”

She wanted to rip the ground up and shred the bones. "I am SO sorry," the sheriff said, his hear in his throat and on his sleeve. "I ain't criticizing you, but you . . . you could have come forward. I never much trusted Jack, and I would've . . ." "I don't think second guessing is going to do us much good," Red said. She turned and knelt on the ground beside Jane, who had gone back to pounding the turf with her fists and crying. "It's not too late," Sheriff Horton replied. "You can still talk to the parole board . . . maybe help your momma out and . . ."

As my elbow slammed against the floor, my face contorted in pain. However, Zachary didn't even look at me. He was only concerned about Gigi's condition. Despite all the disappointment I felt for him, I still felt saddened by this. He didn't even know the full story, but he still did his best to get Gigi acquitted of all charges. She grimaced. “I’m afraid he was too far gone.” Sadness weighed down my chest. “He was a good guy.” “He was a serial killer,” she snorted. I glared at her. “He saved my life and probably the lives of a lot of poor little kids.”

Doc, “it’s definitely overwhelming for her Henry, you can’t expect her to trust just ANY MAN after what’s happened to her. She’s going to need therapy and god knows how long it will take her to recover fully, if ever.” Sheriff, “I know, but I’m not ANY MAN, I’m the Sheriff, if she should trust a MAN it should be me. I just wish she’d tell me more so I can catch these bastards and put them away. I hate the thought of people like that being a part of and possibly living in our town”.
