I say. Fate’s gaze snaps back to me. “Then what is?” I meet his eyes. “Weight.” The word settles like gravity. Fate stiffens. “He acted.” “Yes,” I agree. “And he carried the cost.” Silence hums between us. “He has not yet outweighed.” The realization moves through Fate like a blade. “You mean,” he begins. “Yes,” I say. “He has altered outcomes, but he absorbed the imbalance himself instead of releasing it into the world. The scales remain level for now. The Weave has no justification to bind him.”

“Fuck. Is it ever going to stop?” A hush fell over the warriors around us—not the calm kind, but the kind that coils in your chest and squeezes. Every single one of them felt it. The shift in the air. The return of death’s shadow. They knew it was starting again. No one had gotten enough rest. Not even close. She twisted, so she wouldn't see me naked, and I threw on the shirt that I had dropped on the floor. Though I have control over my shifting, I was far too angry with myself to control myself from it tonight.

I shooed her away, assuring her that I did know how to work them and sat at the one located farthest from the door. She had said before that Aro had put a lot of work into cataloguing various information about our kind, from our laws to our myths. I began quickly typing any buzz words I could think of that might retrieve documents related to fated mates. I searched for what felt like hours, becoming increasingly frustrated that nothing I entered brought up anything useful about breaking our bond. I decided I would try one last link under my current search term, 'broken bond', and was stunned at what was on the screen before me.

That would be a whole new level of recklessness, even for me. I have my rules and I need to stick to them. So for the next few weeks I am as good as gold. The model student, polite and respectful.
