Twenty-One - Hannah Mae’s POV – I heard a knock from the door but my mind was too bothered to wonder who it might be. The sun was already shining but I was still buried in my bed. Or perhaps, practicing myself how to die. I just lost my appetite after knowing the truth that shattered my world into pieces. It had been days and it kept on flashing in my mind. And every time came to my mind, my tears fell without realizing it. I was felt like my chest is tightening and my heart felt like being stabbed by dozens of knives.

“What do you know? Must be fate.” I start walking again. “Or I’m in hell.” I hear his intoxicating chuckle as he follows me in silence to the next class. I take my seat, almost in the back. He still sits close, but this time he was diagonal from me and out of my line of vision. Maybe, just maybe, I’d be able to focus in this class. I think I heard fate laugh at me. “What the hell were you and Ryan talking about?”

Saph POV Everything happened so fast. Yaya is white with shock as Artemis bleeds out. Asher’s large wolf tackles Grizz to the ground, not giving Grizz a chance to shift and defend himself. With Artemis gone, any magic that was affecting Brickland wears off. Brickland shifts mid-air aiming for Foster. Foster shoves Yaya away, shifting in time to meet Brickland’s wolf. I struggle and roll on the ground, trying to break free from the ropes that are rubbing my skin raw.

Silence stretched between us, thickened by unspoken tension as he stared into my eyes – yet I couldn’t look away. Thalion blinks, extinguishing the glow in his irises. “The future is unpredictable, written in sand and not stone.” Puffing out my lips, humming a teasing tune. “I think I’m finally able to understand your poetic way of speaking.” He chuckles, a flicker of amusement washing over his features. “My speech changes when I use my ability.” Suddenly the atmosphere shifted, thickened by desolation. Thalion features softened with traces of sadness. “I hope you never encounter the darkest parts of that future.”

she replied, forcing the words out evenly, “but I’d rather stand here shaking than crawl at your feet.” For a moment, neither moved. Predator and prey locked in a battle of will. Then his mouth twisted into a dangerous smile. “You won’t be standing for long.” The pain in her side throbbed, but she held his gaze, unbroken. And then something inside her cracked. It was a violent, splintering snap. Pain, fear, and betrayal shattering into something harder. It all twisted together and became something else entirely. FURY.

His eyes widened when he saw that it was already the next day and almost time for him to get up for school. Caiden’s eyes stung as he fought back his tears and asked, >Cyraeneus, what is the meaning of this? Did you not say that we would shift right after midnight?< Cyraeneus narrowed his eyes and sighed, >I am sorry Caiden, if we did not shift that means we can never shift. Every time I reincarnate, I shift later than all of my siblings but I guess, this time around I will not be shifting.< Caiden cried into his palms, >This is so unfair, I hate my life!!<

My mind kept drifting back to the scroll hidden in the basement, to the runes I had drawn on the floor. I had found the scroll hidden among my grandmother's things after she died. It was ancient, written in a language that had taken me weeks to decipher. It spoke of the Fates—Abraxas, the Fate of Life; Kaius, the Fate of Death; and Ryuu, the Fate of Destiny. The Fates ruled the universe, deciding the course of every life, every death, every destiny. The scroll claimed that one could summon a Fate and ask for a boon. But it came with a warning: to call on a Fate was to risk death. I didn't care about the risk. If I didn't do something, I would be exposed as a Shade during my first shift, and

“Before you decide fate is against you, try shifting without fear.” The idea sank into me, cool and unfamiliar. Shift without fear. The thought alone made my stomach twist. Shifting had always been tied to pain, to something foreign and uncontrollable. But what if it didn’t have to be? I looked around. Callum, Asher, Malcolm—they were all occupied, too focused on the war ahead to see the war raging inside me. It would be selfish to pull them away, to ask them to hold my hand through something I should face alone.

I tighten my grip on his hand to root him to the moment and remind him that I’m here. Felicity shakes her head, still staring down at Frost’s twisted, pained expression. “If this is how he’s creating feral shifters now, it will end badly. Very, very badly,” she says, almost to herself. “They’ll be unhinged. Violent. Deranged. Unstoppable.” Her words pierce through my worries over Frost, but quite frankly, I’m not in a position to care about an army of unhinged shadow shifters forced into service by her ex when I just want my mate to be safe.

I exhaled and let my shoulders drop. Behind me, Finn and Fia hadn’t moved. They were watching the space where the covenant had existed, like they were waiting for something to crawl back out of the ground and prove this wasn’t finished. It was finished. I knew it in my bones. “They’re not coming back,” I said. Finn glanced at me. “You’re sure?” “Yes.” I turned slightly, enough to see his face. “This wasn’t a delay. It was an ending.” Fia finally lowered her hood. Her eyes looked tired in a way no child’s ever should. “The future shifted,” she murmured. “Hard. Like something snapped and stayed broken.”
