Jeffery closed the last file on his desk. The sound of the paper hitting the wood was loud in the quiet room. He didn’t stay to think or read it again. Usually, he was a man who liked order, but today he moved fast. He stood up and went straight to the big bookshelf against the wall. He reached out and pulled one book, then quickly swapped it with another. It was a smooth move. Right away, the wall started to move. It slid open just enough for him to walk through. He didn’t slow down.

"If he's gonna make it I could use your help getting him home, before he bleeds out!" A moment of hesitation was all Ezekiel got this time, before his brothers all moved back into the shadows and De-Shifted. The change from Shifter to man, or as his people called it De-Shifting; was always accompanied by an intense blast of energy all along a Shifters skin. Most felt it like a hot wave across the skin and face, which is exactly what Ezekiel felt cascaded across the still night air, times three. Sharp heat prickled across his skin, as he watched his three brothers meld from one shape into another.

It was silent now, aside from my footsteps, but I still could imagine just how magical it felt when the piano at the center of the room was being played. I kept searching the library; none of the titles stood out to me so I gave up and grabbed the book that was sitting in a cozy-looking chair. I plopped myself down and flipped through the first few pages. My eyebrows furrowed as I closed the book and reread the title. "The Origin of Shifters?" I murmured. This book should be thousands of pages long with obnoxiously dense material, but the one in my hands was maybe a hundred pages and full of hand-drawn pictures.

The library felt like a gift, and that was what made it dangerous. I moved slowly along the shelves, trailing my fingers across the spines of books. The contact sent a faint shiver through me, not pleasure exactly, but recognition. Something inside me loosened, not relief and not comfort, but a thin strand of control I had not realized was missing. The titles were familiar in tone if not in detail. Business. Finance. Strategy. Leadership. Negotiation. The kinds of books men like Jaden collected to justify their decisions after the fact, volumes that framed dominance as intelligence and conquest as foresight.

Then, as I reached for another book on the top shelf, my fingers barely brushed the binding before the old wood creaked beneath my touch. No! The entire shelf wobbled. Before I could react, it tipped forward, sending books crashing to the floor with a loud thud. I stumbled back, my heart racing. “Great,” I groaned, crouching down to pick them up. One by one, I stacked them neatly. But as I reached for the last book, my fingers brushed against something stiff and glossy.

Tania and I rounded one of the rows, finding two faeries—one casting ever-burning flames throughout the library while the other used the air element to gather books from the box and move them to the shelves. I instantly recognized the one shifting the books, "Zora." Tania huffed a laugh, "She is ancient, that one." "Are fae immortal?" There was so little we knew about the fae.

"I'll give you a hand. I have nothing else to do." "Well, pick up a book and start reading," Laura said and Mark passed her a heavy, leather-bound book with faded writing on the front. "If there is anything even remotely useful in it then it goes on the pile by the staircase, if it's not useful it goes on the pile by the window." There was only one obvious pile: the one by the window. It was stacked high with books that Laura and Mark had looked through and found to be unhelpful. Indianna made her way to a chair and sat down, opening the book. She looked around at the library and swallowed. There were thousands of books. Was it possible that one of them had something that could help them?
