I fanned myself with my map, trying to cool my burning cheeks. That was when it happened. At first, I thought my vision was playing tricks on me. The heat shimmered harder, the air rippling like waves above fire. Then—right there on the backrest of the bench—a horn emerged. Golden-red and pulsating. I jerked back, I had seen this symbol before! I shot upright, my heart slamming. “What—what is that?” The shimmer widened, cracking open like a mirror splitting. A rift. Two shadows stretched out inside it, long and black, darker than dark.

It was as if the symbols were shifting, rearranging themselves to spell out a message. Suddenly, the message became clear. "The path to the truth is hidden in plain sight," it read. I turned to Ryker, my eyes wide with excitement. "What does it mean?" I asked. Ryker's eyes were fixed on the symbols. "I think it means that the answer is right in front of us," he said. "We just have to look at things from a different perspective." As we stood there, pondering the message, I felt a strange sensation. It was as if the chamber was shifting, the walls and crystals rearranging themselves to reveal a hidden path.

As the floor of the Twenty-Sixth Cycle’s Data-Farm dissolved into silver pixels and jagged code, the thousands of shifters we had just "unplugged" let out a collective, primal roar that was swallowed by the expanding void. We weren't just falling through space; we were plummeting through the Sub-Strata of the Loom, layers of discarded history and failed "Optimizations" that the High Council had buried beneath the pristine grid of the city-telar.

Clawed hands. Burning eyes. Things that should not exist trying to claw their way into our world.

Every step made the echoes in my head louder. Images came without warning. A woman kneeling in blood-soaked grass, her hands glowing as she screamed toward the sky.
