I had seen that look in Sol's eyes many times before, yet he always seemed to pull himself away before something happened. "Be careful, sweet. Stop it when I tell you. I know my own limits." I gulped as I nodded, and he released a shaky breath. He collapsed onto me and rested his head on my stomach. "You're going to be the death of me." He huffed a laugh, and I cautiously held his head against my stomach again. "Wouldn't that be something," I mumbled, "bringing death to a vampire?" "It's more common than you may think," he whispered. I could hear the fight in his voice as he warded against sleep.

I warned, although it sounded like I was joking. He snorted "In the event that you can't get a wooden stake, decapitation works. So does fire." A sense of humor? Who would've thought. Not wanting to continue the journey in silence, I blurted "Tell me a story." This time, he took his eyes from the road to look at me, perplexed. That made two of us. I thought he was going to ignore my statement but all he said was "What type of story?" "Of how vampires came to be." My voice was small and greedy, thirsty for any bit of information that would help me not jump out of the car and start rethinking why in the world I wasn't scared of sitting beside a vampire.

I don’t even know if I should be here. I inch closer to him, my fingers curling into the fabric of his sleeve. He doesn’t shake me off, doesn’t tell me I’m slowing him down. He just watches, waiting for the right moment. Then he moves. Fast. Lethal. Precise. The first vampire doesn’t even see him coming before he takes it down with a clean, swift motion, snapping its neck then pulling it's head out of it body. Within a matter of seconds, I feel it’s teeth sink in and then all of my energy is drained from my body before I pass out.

He looked at me with disappointment. "How many times would I have to tell you this Amaya, I would never in my life hurt you." "How am I even supposed to stick with that when I don't even know your name?" "Faire enough." He chuckled. "My name is Damon." Damon, that's a nice name. Wait a damn minute. "Damon Salvatore?"
