I wasn’t sure I wanted to know. He moved quickly, weaving through aisles until we reached the far end of the room. There, he scanned the shelves with his fingertips before pulling out a thick tome coated in dust. The cover was bound in faded leather and sealed with a clasp that didn’t look remotely normal, it had symbols carved into it, almost like tiny constellations. He traced a symbol over the clasp, and with a soft metallic click, it released. The book creaked open. I hovered beside him, leaning just enough to glimpse the pages he flipped through, each one filled with looping glyphs and illustrations of creatures, rituals, symbols, and magic I’d only heard about in stories people labeled

"Samuel Brooks said it was a record of crimes." "It is." Elara stopped at the end of the table. She pointed to a massive, silver-bound book sitting on a stone plinth. "But 1998 isn't a year. Look at the first page." I walked over. My hand shook as I opened the heavy cover. The paper was yellowed, covered in tight, neat script. I didn't see dollar signs. I saw names. Locations. Dates. Lucas Vance. Age 14. Shot. December 12.

{Alora’s POV} Morningstar was still standing before me with the book in hand. A sign language learning book for which he wanted to use to learn just the basics. It was a kind gesture; anyone would see it as that, but coming from Morningstar, it just felt… “We’ll need a system.” That was all he said. I looked at the book, then at him. He moved on and turned a few pages, scanning quickly, then stopping somewhere in the middle.

But when she pulled it free, her breath stopped. The book was unlike anything she had ever seen. Its cover was bound in leather so dark it seemed almost black, though in the right light it shimmered faintly with hues of deep crimson. Strange symbols—curved, jagged, and foreign—were etched into its surface, pressed deep into the hide like scars. No title marked its spine. A lock, thin and ancient-looking, sealed its pages.
