Chapter 32: Cracks in the Silence. Becky’s POV Two weeks of tension—of pretending not to feel the way my chest stuttered every time Haunter looked at me for too long—had finally built into something unbearable. The cult hadn’t resurfaced since the attack on the perimeter. But silence? Silence was worse. Silence meant plotting. Silence meant waiting. And I hated waiting. I tried to keep myself busy. Mapping old paths through the forest. Studying the fragments of parchment we'd found in the collapsed tunnels. Making late-night excuses not to sit too close to Haunter in strategy meetings because his proximity made my pulse betray me every damn time.

The dark night had fallen. Around us, the chirping of crickets filled the silence, their song weaving through the darkness that enveloped the forest where we stood. It was quiet—deeply, almost unnervingly quiet. A gentle breeze began to stir, causing the old windows of the cabin to creak and groan as if whispering secrets long forgotten.

It was because I was confused. The apartment echoed with quiet, every sound amplified, and the scrape of her fork, the hum of the refrigerator, the ticking clock that never missed a second. She sat on the couch afterward, knees drawn up, staring at the blank television screen. This was what it had come to. Not anger. Not heartbreak. Neglect so complete it had become normal. Her phone buzzed again. Calloway: You busy? She hesitated. Jordan: No. The reply came faster than she expected. Calloway: I’m walking by the river. You could join me if you want. No pressure. No pressure. Jordan closed her eyes.

"If I were her, I'd probably pretend to be mute and stay silent for years too. That voice is enough to make anyone want to gouge their own ears out!" My desk was kicked over, sending all the books scattering across the floor. Alice yanked my hair hard, then she raised her hand and slapped me across the face. "I'm talking to you, Summer! Your mute act is over, and now you're deaf? Can't hear anyone, right?" I shoved her with all my strength. "Let go of me!"

Lauren rebutted, confidently. "Are you sure about that? Listen to this." At first, Lauren heard nothing but the noise from the party. Just when she was about to sneer, she heard Malcolm's voice. His voice wasn't loud but the entire hall was pin silent so she could hear everything he said. She listened for a few minutes before her mouth opened in shock. She was so D. O. O. M. E. D!

As soon as she entered, she clung to Andrew and said, "Didn't you say you would visit me at the hospital today, Andy?" Andrew didn't dare hold her or push her away with his parents around. Alice was the first to break the silence. "Don't you think you're being too intimate with someone who's supposed to be your brother when his wife is around?" Her expression darkened as she looked at Nina. Meanwhile, the latter turned to look at Robert and Alice, seemingly just noticing that they were there.

"Good evening. Is Ms. Grace here? This letter is from the city hall—please sign for it." Philip froze. "City hall? Why would they be contacting Grace?" He took the envelope and opened it. A second later, he was stunned by what he read. Inside was a stamped and approved Mate Bond Termination Agreement. "Grace wants to sever our bond? That's impossible, I can still feel it. I—" he whispered. He closed his eyes and tried to reach for the mate bond inside him. There was nothing. It was gone. Somewhere, somehow—Grace had already cut the bond.

“There’s one around the corner. We can check it out tomorrow if you want.” “Oh my God,” she breathed. “There’s a book club? I’ve always wanted to go to one. Talk about books with real people and all that. Thank you so much, Nolan.” The smile in her voice made my chest ache in the best way. “But,” she added, “the book club is tomorrow. I’m talking about tonight. Like, I can’t close my eyes right now. I keep seeing that image. It’s just... messed up.” “I know,” I sighed. “But it’s too late for me to come over, and you can’t come here either. Not tonight. We’ll talk tomorrow, alright?”
