⛏️ Chapter Twelve: The Descent into the Silver Veins ​The air in the disused mine shaft hit us like a physical weight—damp, metallic, and cold. The familiar scent of earth and granite was overlaid with a strange, subtle hum that made the hairs on my arms rise. This was the source of the Silver Wolf Pack’s ancient magic—the ground itself was rich in trace lunar metal, a faint echo of the Shard's power. It was protection, but it was also a homing beacon.

The book was the classic kind of book they frequently saw in period dramas with a dark blue cover. The hairpin seemed simple yet luxurious up close. Fur that soothed the terror and dulled the pain. "I have you." Perception shifted until it looked like I was viewing the world from a distance. I tried to move, but my body wouldn’t obey my commands. "You just rest. All will be well." Little by little, my body fought back the change. No. Silver fought back the change. She kept us human. She kept the others safe.

I pulled them down one by one, making a stack against my chest. Then, because Bailey had apparently infected my brain, I added one ridiculous paperback from the fiction shelf too. A cover with a snarling wolf and a woman whose dress would have been impractical in every season. If I was going to lose my mind, I might as well gather evidence. I settled into a chair by the window and opened the silver book first. Most of it was exactly what it should have been: old superstitions, purity myths, anti evil symbolism, protective charms. Silver against curses, silver against the restless dead, silver against what the night might drag close if left unguarded.
