Not only had she genuinely smiled and even laughed she did so in response to one of his lame attempts at a joke.

The tone of her laugh was so unexpected that Jane froze. "Madam?" But Dahlia only laughed again. Not because she found anything funny, but because she was so hurt even after three years of being treated like nothing. Silas still managed to hit another low.
