' Tom muttered as he kept on staring at the book morosely. Yesterday, when he had opened this book, he saw some kind of hand-drawn sketches. Some words were written by the side of the sketches which seems to bolt when your attention wavers only to stay still as he peers directly over them to understand the mystery before him. It was like the case of 'the more you look, the less you see. ' The words were zapping around like hyperactive happy kids but never when Tom was fully focused.

The house… felt lighter. He walked toward the kitchen. On the table sat the sketchbook. Open to a clean page. A drawing formed slowly on the paper—by no hand he could see. He watched. The lines were soft. Gentle. A woman. Smiling. Standing beside a boy. They were outside, beneath a tree. And in the corner of the drawing, almost hidden— A chapel. Whole. Unburned. And in one of its windows, very small, a figure watched over them.

Sketch’s straightforward question. “For my story that I’ve only been doing for about a week...” I lied. “...it’s a bit difficult to explain but what’s already written is really happening.” I hesitantly said. Sketch sighed. “It’s just all coincidence, don’t take it seriously.” He said then stood up and left. Doodle looked and followed Sketch until he disappeared in his sight. I smiled and laughed a little. “He will be back; he’ll be here again in about five minutes.” I said to Doodle not looking at him.

‘…are a part of our soul? Shaking my head, I flipped to another page and started sketching again. I sketched the forest but not where I was sitting. The one from my dream. The giant rock that was in the clearing further away, the different trees they had and how spaced they were. The ground being covered in a light mossy grass. I worked on the sketch for a while, getting the details right without adding the two little wolves and the one inflicting the pain. ‘Hey, Ethan. It’s been a couple hours and your mom and dad are here.’

Then I reached into my bag and took out the sketchbook. I had not planned to show anyone. I had not shown Priya. I had not shown my father. The sketchbook had been between me and the dressing table and Mr Cheng’s cutting table and nowhere else. I opened it to the jacket page and set it on the table between us. She did not say anything immediately. She pulled it slightly closer and looked at it the way Mr Cheng had looked at it …not admiring, reading. Her eyes moved across the seam lines. She turned to the next page without asking.

Regardless, saying I saw that coming — especially this soon — was a lie. Mira walked in shortly after Yvette left to clear the table. I had already warned her about being too free with Yvette and letting her do something as mischievous as swimming naked, so I let her do her job without reprimanding her. As soon as she left, I pulled a book from my drawer. It had plain beige pages and had stayed with me from my childhood… I turned to the most recent page that had an uncompleted sketch on it. Brilliant curves… messy bun… slim legs… I instinctively gave the sketch a freckled face and lips pressed into a thin line. Charming eyes with defiance burning through them.

I unzipped it as I shoved the few bank notes I had stolen from the bald man and also the few bank notes that the plum till operator had given me as my change. My hand felt a hard thing as I grabbed it and pulled it out. It was my sketch book. I slowly ran my hands on it as burning feeling echoed in my chest. I slowly opened it. The complete sketch of Sorrow came to my view. I bite my lower lip to stop myself from crying.

Messy, unpredictable, beautiful life. And for once, the world didn’t feel like it was leaving me behind. I picked up my notebook again, flipping through the pages slowly. Past the scenes of battle. Past the maps. Past the sketches of beasts, the descriptions of portals, the fragments of conversations I had written down word for word so I wouldn’t forget them. Past the chapter where Carter fell—my handwriting shaky, uneven. Past the aftermath, where I wrote in half-finished sentences because breathing hurt too much to focus.
