Beneath the Surface
He unscrewed a small tube of ointment, squeezed a bit onto his fingertips, and began to apply it gently to the bruised skin.
I flinched at the first touch. His head snapped up immediately, his eyes flashing with something dangerous. He looked at me like my pain was a personal offense, like he couldn’t stand the thought of me hurting under his watch.
“It’s okay,” I whispered quickly. “I’m fine.”
He didn’t answer. His face had hardened into that same impenetrable mask, but beneath it I could see the cracks. His fury was barely leashed, simmering just under the surface, but his touch… his touch was careful. Almost tender.
