Her voice slid into my thoughts as if it had always been there, waiting. I didn’t hesitate. My paws shifted against the wooden floor and before I even thought about it, we leapt through the small attic window and landed on the grass below. The cool blades bent under our weight but didn’t break. We ran straight for the tree line, the forest opening up ahead of us. The moonlight poured down like water, blessing our fur as we ran. “I’ve watched you grow up, Skye,” Lyra said as we bounded between the trees, her voice still inside me, calm but strong. “You don’t have to be scared anymore. I will protect you now that I am here.”

After leaving the Sawyer residence, Skye wandered aimlessly along the road, thoughts drifting, until a small figure bumped into her. She looked down and saw a little girl no taller than her knee, sobbing softly. “What’s wrong?” Skye asked gently, reminded for a moment of Moa. “I had a fight with Mommy… I ran away from home, but now I’m lost… sobs… Big Sister, why are you out here all alone?” Skye glanced around. They were already at the far edge of the City. If this child kept wandering, something bad would definitely happen.

ANAYA'S POV “Slow down Skye, you'll hurt yourself.” I shouted, running after my best friend. She shifted suddenly and jumped over the white fence. I groaned letting Silver out and jumped as well. “My princess!” I heard the guards yell but catching Skye was my main priority then. The wolf didn't stop, she kept jumping over the woods,the sound of the branches cracking against her paw. “There's a ditch ahead, Anaya!” Silver warned. “Skye hold on!” I tried calling out to her but she didn't listen, she ran faster instead and fell right into the ditch.

Skye opened his eyes and carefully lifted his head, peering around us into the night. “What's out there?” He asked in a whisper. “I don't know.” I replied. “The silence woke me. It could be anything. Mountain lion, one of the Shaded Paws Pack, even…” Icy dread seeped into my veins, and I shivered. “Even what?” Skye pressed closer to my side. “Lykaon.” The word crept from my thoughts as if even thinking about the cursed being would summon it from the shadows.
