Each dawn, she’d find traces: muddy prints by the east door, torn fabric caught on the gate, the faint scent of pine and smoke clinging to the air. The staff said nothing. But Lena noticed how they flinched when wolves howled beyond the forest line. One evening, Damien summoned her to the library. A fire crackled in the hearth, throwing amber light across the shelves. On the table lay several old books weathered leather, symbols embossed in silver. I need you to catalog these, he wrote, sliding them toward her. Do not open the red one. Her eyes flicked to the crimson-bound volume at the center. Its cover bore a sigil she recognized from his ring a crescent moon entwined with a wolf’s head.

It was because the storage bag was filled with over a hundred unsavory picture books. Caspian froze. Apart from The Pure Lady Cultivator, there were also The Youth Cultivator Hank, The Exquisite Sisters, and My Fox Spirit Companion. One could tell from all these titles what type of books they were. Caspian emptied the bag and retrieved the spirit stones, a couple of potions, and pills before tossing all those books to one side without sparing them another glance. Maya did not know what the skinny cultivator used to do, so she was curious when she saw Caspian tossing aside all those books. She walked over and flipped through a couple of them. "This area has the older records and texts dealing with relics and ancient lore." Alec, Luna and Jax began digging through the stacks of books just in case they saw something, even a reference text to their relic. Luna's hands started shaking when she picked up a heavy leather-covered book. Intricate symbols embossed the old cover of the book, and the title was difficult to make out. As she opened the book, the weight of the book shifted, and she could see a sea of words and images depicting old symbols. She flipped through some pages reading and scanning each image for anything about their crystal orb, whether it be directly or indirectly.

His tunic was now slightly unbuttoned, revealing the top of his chest. “I was wondering,” my voice was far too loud, far too loud for the overwhelming silence surrounding us, but it immediately grabbed both men’s attention, “if there’s a good book to read, or something that could give me information about you, about the Kingdom, and everything else I should know?” Sicca looked at Nicolais, Nicolais looked at Sicca. “She could start with the collected works?” The collected works sounded like a massive undertaking. An ancient-looking tome, and a thick grimoire. I picked both up and quickly unlatched them before flipping through the pages with growing anticipation. Unlike the others, none of the pages were torn. I heaved a sigh of relief while a faint smile tugged at my lips. “Now, let’s see what you are,” I whispered. I scanned the titles carefully. The grimoire was titled Makisteia. The tome beneath it was Malkara Lyk — Vael Sorcery and Curse of the Wolves respectively.

The filthy reminder made her shiver with fresh arousal. “Next time,” she whispered, lips brushing his ear, “we try the rare books room. It locks from the inside.”

He bowed and was gone as quickly as he arrived, leaving the heavy satchel behind. I lunged for the bag the moment the tent flap sealed. I untied the cord with shaking fingers and pulled out the book. It wasn't ancient and brittle. It was a modern reprint, but the cover read: Healers' Lore: The Legacy of the Wounded Crown. It was a medical text, disguised as a historical relic.

No one answered him because they were all thinking the same thing. If the Belmars had reached the library first... Then the Codex might already be gone. * * * * * They searched methodically. Valkyrie inspected the walls, tapping lightly against the stone with the hilt of her sword. Rynese wandered through the shelves, muttering the strange book titles under his breath. "The First Blood Oath..." "Chronicles of the Eastern Clans..." "Origins of the Moon Throne..." "Who reads this stuff?" he whispered. "You would if your life depended on it," Valkyrie replied without looking up. "Fair point."

The gaps between entries got longer and longer, and he complained more and more about all the time he lost to his debilitating moods. The only thing that seemed to lift his spirits was finding a certain specialist bookseller. Matthew had continued to collect rare books on the occult, and he was always looking for book shops to sell the paper he wrote on the ancient forest. This bookseller not only took several copies of his paper, he also sold Matthew a unique grimoire by an unknown author. The grimoire fascinated Matthew, and he made notes on it in his journal. Sally couldn’t understand much of what he wrote, but she found one entry, towards the end of the journal, very interesting:

I didn’t want him to worry especially since I didn’t even know if there was anything to actually worry about. “I need to read your grimoires.” Christian looked at me a bit puzzled but then replied. “Well of course you can read them, knowing the spell books is an important part for perfection of your great talents.” She had a giant smile on her face, she seemed proud to allow me to use her spell books. “May I take them to my hut for some privacy?” I asked She then nudged me playfully “Absolutely, you need your focus when reading these books. I will go gather them all and bring them straight to you. I’ll also grab the book the sprites gave to you, perhaps a little bit of studying will help you
