His face fell, and he stuttered, “S-She’s fine. She didn’t actually try anything. When I got back, I found out it was all pretend. She drank fake wolfsbane to trick me into returning.”
As he spoke, he reached out to grab my hand. “But listen, it’s over. I sent her away. She won’t bother us again. Mia, I was wrong. Please, forgive me.”
I looked at him, but there was no emotion left in my chest.
“Lucien,” I said quietly, “I’m done with you. I’m not going back.”
Lucien went pale, and his voice rose in disbelief. “Why? Mia, you loved me. I know you did. Why won’t you just give me another chance?”
