The longest, loudest yawn she’d ever done. Her eyelids were so heavy now, but how could that be? How could you fall asleep when you were already dreaming? She remembered something they’d covered in school the previous Halloween. About a writer and one of his poems, about dreams within dreams, but she hadn’t really been paying attention and couldn’t for the life of her recall his name.

Cara's POV I woke up to the familiar sound of painful grunts. Or should I say I never really slept? Tossing over, I switched on the bedside lamp. Adonis's brows were pulled down, cold sweat all over his face as he lay stiffly. He was having sleep paralysis again, and this was the third time in three days. Ever since that night...

Sleep over taking me, but not in a pleasant way. I was being attacked by sleep paralysis the whole night! I couldn't even move my body nor open my eyes, but I could hear weird voices, and feel wetness on my legs, and hands slithering all over my body. It was frightening and I kept saying a short protection prayer against unrested souls. They say it demons attacking you while you sleep, coming to intrude on your dreams. When morning came I was awoken by a slight chime that was coming from the clock on the wall and a small red bruise on my thigh.

She couldn't tell her the real reason why she had screamed. "Are you sure, hmm? Or did you experience sleep paralysis again?" her Nana continued. She smiled sweetly and shook her head. That's the impact of the tragedy that happened to her parents. It's not just anxiety attacks. She also experiences sleep paralysis. Savannah held the old woman's hand. "I am fine, nana. Please don't worry." But her Nana was still not convinced, so she thought of another way to change the subject. "Uhmm... why don't you get me some food, nana? I'd like to eat strawberries and kiwi. And I'd like to have your kare-kare. Please cook for me?," she suggested.

Epilogue: Now that I have written several of these stories, I find that my old ghosts have started to haunt my dreams yet again. It is amazing that once things are written down, they begin to take on a life of their own. Just remember, if you don’t want things to go bump in the night, don’t tell anyone else about them.

My body felt like it was about to give up on me, but I kept trying to break free from the paralysis, fighting to wake up and escape.

Noah sat on the edge of the bed, fidgeting with his fingers. “I had a nightmare,” he whispered. “I woke up and… you were gone. Sleep paralysis held me down. Then I heard noise. Thought maybe—” He faltered. “There were footsteps. The same footsteps that flooded my head when I met your uncle. Heavy, slow… I don’t know but I suddenly remember experiencing this before. I had frequent sleep paralysis before and there's always that footstep. I was awake when Red came in, but I couldn't move or speak.”

Liam added, scratching the back of his neck with an awkward smile. “You’re color blind too?!” Jane exclaimed, eyes wide. Liam laughed, “No. I wish, though.” “So…” she pushed. “Well, I with frequent sleep paralysis. Sixty eight percent of the time I fall asleep, I experience it and it’s always a nightmare.” Liam casually said. Jane turned towards him, eyes filled in shock and pity. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. Jane had no words to describe how she felt. The image of Liam struggling to wake and forcing himself to sleep was painful to imagine.
