The fatigue had now at last taken its toll. I was lying there silent, and my own eyelids were getting heavier. The quick up and down motion of his chest, the low moan of the monitor by the crib, the silent house--it was the first few moments of peace we had had in days. I had no idea when I fell asleep, but just expected that it could not have taken long before I was roused by the gentle sound of the knock at the door. Then, a whisper. "Jules?" I groaned, still half asleep. "What time is it?"

Lelia stirred restlessly in her sleep. She was having a nightmare. She found herself in the middle of a dark forest. She heard a terrible voice behind her. The man was calling her. He was asking her to stop. The man was ordering her to give up and surrender to him.

POV: Zia Have you ever wanted to wake up, only to realize you’ve been dreaming for years? That the life you remember was just a long, dull sleep? Sometimes, the truth is a nightmare you can't blink away. When my eyes finally pried open, the world didn't recognize me. Instead of my bedroom ceiling and the comfort of my old life in Pennsylvania, I was boxed in by thin blue plastic. The floor crinkled under my weight like a warning. I was in a tent.

"Tsk, such a teasing little jinx. Remember to miss me." I frowned and locked the screen. After Mia finished reheating breakfast, she finally realized she had left her phone behind and walked over, clearly nervous. When she saw the dark screen, she quietly let out a sigh of relief. I watched her every move, sneering inwardly. As I stared at the pancakes in my hand, hot on the outside and raw within, my thoughts drifted back to the days when Mia and I first got together. Back then, I was a serious, hardworking senior in college, with good grades and no dating history.

I see nothing. I feel nothing. I can move nothing. But I can hear everything. "You have to wake up, Mari," the voice pleads. It was...eerie and familiar, but I can't seem to remember who. The darkness was everywhere. And I was in a never-ending fall towards it. The first thing that crossed my mind was sleep paralysis. I was having an episode of sleep paralysis but this one I can't fight. I remain still, unmoving, dead. With all the energy that's left of me, I tried to reach and follow the voice. But it was no use. Instead, I let the darkness eat me up.

Moments later, just as when she felt she was running out of air, Chastine’s mind had become aware that she was in a dream state. She regained consciousness, but she found it hard to move her limbs. Sleep paralysis, she thought. Chastine then tried very hard to move her forefinger to break it. She tried harder, but this time she tried to speak her god's name, Dianos. Dianos must’ve heard her cry for help to get her out of her nightmare. As soon as she uttered his name, even weakly, she got out of her sleep paralysis. She moved her body so she can sit up. Cold sweat was beading out of her pores.

Hindi ko alam kung bakit ako kinabahan sa huling sinabi niya. “Kasi, palagi ko siyang napapanaginipan, Connor. Lagi kong napapanaginipang nag-i-sleep paralysis siya.” Hindi ko alam kung bakit bigla akong nakaramdam ng takot . . . ng kaba. “At ‘yong painting na nakita mo, yung nasa harap ng isang makalumang eskwelahan habang magkaharap kayo, paulit-ulit din sa panaginip ko ‘yon.”

I’m too tired to be embarrassed about it. “Right. Well, I had an episode. I’m better now.” “Episode?” he says, confused. I can hear the question in his voice. The silence asking for more information without the actual words that would make it all seem too real. “I’m not mentally ill. I’ve-” I stop for a moment. It’s not like I know this guy that well. How can I tell him the only thing that I’ve only actually ever told 3 people in my life? “I- I - just don’t sleep much, it’s kind of like a night terror type deal.” I say, trying my best to be honest and vague at the same time.
