Eden Monroe. On a hot, sunny day, while rushing to attend a class, I came across my best friend Carla. I was surprised to see her wearing a large hoodie that obscured her face, as this was not her typical style. I approached her and called out her name. As she looked up at me, I noticed that she was smoking. "What in the world are you doing? I can't believe you're smoking on school grounds, Carla!" I exclaimed. Carla took a puff from her cigarette and blew out a stream of smoke before responding to me, "I know, I'm sorry. I'm just going through a lot right now and I needed something to help me cope."

I watched them with a knotted belly as they blew smoke into the air through their mouths and noses. “You three were heavily involved?” The man asked again. The silence lingered again before Jaden cursed. “Fuck yeah.” Casper turned to look at me again but I lowered my head, my eyes on the blank screen of my phone. “That's real trouble, bro!” The man laughed and gulped down a glass of the dark rum. “Don't worry, it's gonna die down soon,” Jordan laughed. The smoke from their burning cigarettes was choking life out of me and the truth of their return was pressing down on my back.

“For the family business. He told us yesterday. He was supposed to board the 10:45 flight.” A collective inhale swept through the room, sharp and synchronized. Edward lifted a trembling hand and pointed toward the large monitor mounted against the bedroom wall. The Hale family did not lack wealth; the television was enormous, crystal-clear, and merciless in its detail. “It’s on the news,” he whispered hoarsely. Every head turned as the TV was turned on immediately by Grace. The screen showed chaos. Smoke billows into a gray sky. Fire was roaring hungrily. Smoke. Wait… smoke? My eyes popped open. “Dinner…” I gasped, still breathless. “Is burning.” Stacy froze. “Shit!” He gently lowered my leg and lunged for the stove, fumbling to turn off the burner. The pan was smoking, but not on fire, thank god. He waved the smoke away with one hand, then turned back to me, wiping his mouth with the other and trying—failing—not to grin.

Just until the pasta softened. A sharp cry pulled me out of sleep. "Mummy-!" My eyes flew open. For a second, I didn't know where I was. The TV was still on, with some other random show playing on screen. Then the smell hit me. Smoke. Thick and bitter. My heart slammed against my ribs as I bolted upright. "Amira," I gasped, scooping her into my arms as she cried into my shoulder. The air burned my throat. The kitchen.

The noble repeated as he inhaled through the cigarette in between his fingers. I cleared out my throat and looked the other way, “Not really, I just…had to get something off my head.” He rested his elbow onto the railings, trying to get my gaze but that made me turn away even more from him. I hesitantly opened my mouth, “Could you please not look at me like that?” I murmured, enough for him to hear. “Like what?” He asked, his voice carried a hint of intrigue.

Bima jerked his hand back, slamming the gas valve shut with one hard twist. Thick black smoke billowed from the pot, carrying a burnt scent that instantly stung their throats. "Bima, get away from there!" Riska shouted, roughly pulling the man’s arm. Lia coughed violently behind them, trying to wave the smoke away with her hand. "What is that smell? This isn't just regular burning, it’s toxic." Kevin stared at the bubbling black liquid in the pot, his eyes wide and his breath coming in fast, ragged gasps. "How did my instant noodles turn into something as hideous as sludge?"

He spent millions of dollars on buying jewelry for me, tens of thousands of dollars on private fireworks displays, and even burned his contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars just to light up my cigarette. It didn't matter if it were money, power, or love—if he had it, he would grant it to me. I stood under the fireworks that lit up the entirety of Staples for me all night long, hearing my heart pounding loudly in my chest. Carlos was the perfect husband in everybody's eyes. "I'm so glad you are awake now. It's almost a week while you were sleeping. I'm really sorry for what I've done to you. I know I'm unforgivable because of what I did but I'm really sorry. I didn't mean it. It was just happened that I've seen a smoke from you. " I frowned at what she said. She seen a smoke from me that's why she attacked me? Is she afraid from smoke? I want to laugh at what she said because it’s unbelievable that a role-model like her that everyone admires is afraid of smoke. Is that even possible? Is smoke can be afraid of? Maybe! It depends upon a situation, anyway.

A soft smile was on his face that quickly disappeared. It was different from the evil smirks or mischievous grins he had most of the time. It was a genuine smile that made his eyes sparkle. I was starting to see what those girls saw in him. "You know shooting stars are meteors, right?" There was a bit of smugness in his voice. I took the last bit of my shawarma, chewing it lightly. "Science ruins everything fun." I sneered. Mikhail pulled out the cigarette, holding it between his fingers. The scent of burnt tobacco and several chemicals, which were unhealthy, lingered. The edges crack lightly as it burns.
