“I thought it was rather punny.” I let out a low, frustrated groan. “Wonderful. I have to deal with two men who like cringe jokes,” I complain unhappily. Why can’t men tell normal jokes for a change? Do they all have to be dad-jokes? As soon as I spot Jay finally coming around the corner, I follow along and wait for him to notice the Sorcerer next to us. It wasn’t like I could say no. He probably thought this was his way of cheering me up, or maybe this was his version of that “perfect way to play” he’d mentioned earlier. So he started. The first joke was… okay. It was about a chicken and a ladder, though I didn’t really get the point of it. Still, I forced a small laugh. I didn’t want to ruin the mood. He went on to the next one. This one was about a man walking into a bakery and asking for bread shaped like a guitar.

Then someone in the crowd sneered, their voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, that must be Sophia's sugar daddy. Showed up to defend her. She's not picky, is she. She'll take a guy in his fifties." The crowd erupted. Some covered their mouths, laughing. Others joined in openly. "Yeah, I heard she doesn't care about age. Maybe this old man's a regular too." The dean's expression tightened. He turned sharply toward the crowd. "All of you–shut your mouths!" He glanced at my injuries, his voice urgent.
