The signal was given, the horns blew, and the army began to move, a river of steel and purpose flowing away from the capital, away from me.
I watched him go, his figure growing smaller and smaller in the distance, until he was just a speck on the horizon, a memory, a ghost. And then I would wake up, my heart pounding, my cheeks wet with tears, the silence of the house a crushing, suffocating weight.
