The Wolf's Game
The stones were chosen deliberately from river granite, strong enough to endure centuries of weather without cracking.
They were never supposed to break. And yet, I stop short, one of the stones is fractured straight down the center. Not shattered. Not split apart.
Cracked.
A thin, jagged line runs from the top of the stone to its base, like a fault line frozen mid-earthquake. The name carved into it remains intact, but the stone itself looks… strained.
Breathing carefully, I step closer, frowning. The air around the stone feels wrong.
When I lean in, a faint rush of wind spills out from the crack, brushing my face like a sigh escaping something that’s been sealed too long.
