The wooden shelves splinters beneath me, books tumbling down in an avalanche of paper and ink.
I scramble to my feet just as he’s on me again, faster than I can react. He grabs my throat, squeezing, lifting me off the ground. I claw at his arm, my vision flickering at the edges. I kick, twisting, snapping at his fingers, but he’s strong—so strong.
“You’re feisty,” he murmurs, lips pulling into a grin. “But you’re just a puppy, aren’t you?And I’ve killed plenty of those.”
My lungs burn. My body screams. My instincts demand I fight. I dig my claws into his wrist, then rake them down his forearm with everything I have. He hisses, dropping me.
