"I don't care if a spider is crawling on you or if a fucking snake winds itself around your spindly neck, just shut the fuck up." I let out a muffled squeak at the thought of a snake slithering around us. Ivan's hands dig into my arms as he pins me to the wall, my feet kick the air as I struggle to dislodge his grip. God only knows what type of insects are crawling on my back now but I don't make a sound even though the thought of it makes me gag. Once the spider is on my hand, I slowly start to take my hand off her leg and put my hand on the ground until the spider walks off slowly by itself. Dr. Smith looks surprised at me and says;

I start to climb down, gripping the cloth rope with everything I have. Don’t look up, I tell myself. *Don’t look up.* But I do. He’s there. Peering out the window, knife in hand. And then I see something peeking from under his sleeve. A spider web tattoo on his wrist. The same one the man outside had days ago. He raises the knife. No—no, no, no He starts cutting the cloth. “Please!” I scream. “Don’t—” The rope snaps. My body freefalls.

Worse yet would be a jump from a building as tall as the Stratosphere. The Vampire was almost back to the landing. He held onto one rung, swinging back and forth, reaching with the other hand, trying to secure his placement. Jamie was closing in. The silence only grew heavier. Then… A faint scratching sound. I stopped walking. Scratch… Scratch… Scratch… The sound seemed to come from inside the walls. I frowned and stepped closer. Tiny black legs slipped through gaps no wider than a fingernail. One spider became five. Five became twenty. Twenty became so many I couldn’t count them. I ran my fingers over the triggers and the grip, trying to focus on the feel of the weapon rather than the fear that was building inside me. I moved from one weapon to the next, slowly working my way around the training ground, but the sense of unease would not dissipate.
