Cruise October "You sure you're okay spending the evening with my family?" I ask Ruby as she climbs into my Jeep and gets situated. "I know this is kind of moving a little quickly for us, but Halloween is a family affair in my house." "No, I'm excited!" She reaches back to put her bag down in the back seat. "Plus I'm super excited to see that you're wearing your old football uniform. And I'm excited to wear my old cheerleading one for you."

“I understand, I was almost late filling out all these scholarships, then I had to run around and get stamps. My parents wouldn’t give me any of theirs. Then I had to go to the bank to have money orders taken out of my account to send in for the college application fees. All of them have nearly wiped me out.” “Yeah.” Normal world problems just couldn’t make an impact today. “You missed my announcement for the next game.” “Which is?” “It’s Halloween on Friday, so we’re gonna have it in a cemetery.” “I don’t know. Isn’t that illegal?” “This is a decommissioned cemetery. No one goes there anymore. We’re gonna bring sleeping bags, pick up some snacks, game all night, then come back in the mornin

Pumpkins had started showing up around the ward. Not real ones, but plastic, hollow, and too bright, but still pumpkins. Someone had taped paper bats along the hallway bulletin board, and the cafeteria offered watery orange punch they called “spooky brew.” It was almost Halloween, and Naya couldn’t stop thinking about how, this time last year, she’d been at Adrian’s office party, dressed in black silk, drinking real champagne. Now she was in paper slippers, eating Jell-O that looked like blood but tasted like cherry cough syrup.

The client's company wasn't far away, so I clocked in and headed out to meet them. When I stepped into the elevator, I was still on the phone with Adam, sharing the good news. The moment the doors closed, the lights flickered, and strange mechanical noises echoed. Only then did I realize I was alone in the elevator. The date was June 23—the same day I had fallen to my death in my previous life. "Adam!" I yell into the phone. "The elevator is dropping—"

“Daddy will chase the monster away.” The basement stairs creaked under my weight. The air grew damp and cold, carrying the familiar smell of concrete and forgotten Christmas decorations. I swept the beam across dusty shelves, old furniture covered in sheets, and stacks of boxes labeled “C9” in black marker—my wife’s obsessive filing system for holiday stuff. Nothing. No glowing eyes, no claws, no growling shadows. Just silence and cobwebs. “Nothing here, Lily!” I called up the stairs, my voice echoing slightly. “Just junk. Come down tomorrow and I’ll show you.”

A warehouse guy here at the school where they have parties. I tensed. I knew that place. "Whose party is it?" -I asked for. "From Elder William's group, I think." -answered. It just can't be. —I also heard that on the day of the full moon in October they will have the best party of their lives —he told us— maybe in a few weeks, are you ready for that day? I thought about it: October full moon, warehouse party, wolves. I didn't think it would be a party but a great massacre. I had that feeling. And I also had a feeling that Elder didn't tell me everything. October full moon? It means a lot of trouble.

After school started back, the excitement turned to the upcoming holiday that all kids and teenagers love, Halloween. The local theater was putting on their annual haunted house but we saw signs that they were short on actors. They had it open on Saturday nights and then on Friday nights that there wasn’t a home football game to compete with.
