As we descended into the subterranean colosseum, the noise became overwhelming. Two thousand warriors filled the stone tiers of the cavern. These were the Shadow Warriors—the battle-scarred outcasts of the Dead Woods. They were alphas, betas, and omegas who had been rejected by their birth packs, criminals who had survived the brutal winter wilderness, and veterans of forgotten border wars. They didn't wear uniforms; they wore heavy furs, iron chains, and leather straps over bodies covered in jagged claw scars. They were savage, and radiated a volatile pressure.

Goosebumps appear on my arms as the thought settles in. I'm hyperaware of Ryan's accelerated breath on the back of my neck as he closes his eyes in concentration. These aren't regular men; these are warriors hardened by loss and the struggle to survive, willing to sacrifice their own lives for the cause. Nathan draws a dagger from a belt holster. As one, we mimic his actions, and the small crowd seems to hold their breath. When Nathan gets up and out into the open, Ryan nudges me to repeat his actions. Everyone paused, forks in midair, eyes turning my way. I met their stares, my expression serious. “Rouges.” “No way,” Fay blurted, eyes wide. “They crossed into pack territory. Not just sniffing around the border—they made it into the living area. Warriors chased them out, but they were fast and smart. We didn’t catch anyone.” I was still upset that I was at the opposite side of the pack at that moment. The table quieted. Even our dad leaned back, arms crossed. “But the real shitshow?” I added grimly. “They were in our backyard.”

Steph and Elijah both turned to them and nodded. "No one gets passed us." Steph said. I saw both his and Elijah's eyes turned that greenish golden color. Bruce looked at me. "We got you, kid." The hungry growls of the warriors became louder. I guess they were done being ignored. They started to close in on us, when suddenly, they all lunged at once. Elijah and Steph exploded, stepping, willing to be the first line of defense. Elijah caught one warrior, swung him around to stop another, and booted another, who thought he'd get passed him. Steph looked like he was about to kill them. My eyes widened when his claws drew out. I yelled.

"Yes, it's interesting information, but it's not important right now. Any other questions about your appearance or can I continue?" The chattering and arguments continued, people throwing out different theories and assumptions. But one thing everyone agreed on— That sexy-looking female warrior was not someone to provoke. The image of how she slaughtered the Blue Rain warrior would be engraved in their minds for a long time. It would haunt many of the men who had harbored lewd thoughts about her just moments ago. I returned my attention to the screen in the sky. Another scene was playing out. A group of warriors was surrounded by twelve strange creatures. They looked like werewolves but had horns and large wings sprouting from their backs, giving them a terrifying and unnatural appearance.

I had been charged with leading many trainings such as this one before, but not only was this my first one as the official Field Marshall, there was one particular recruit I was hoping to gain more insight on. As I approached the training grounds I could see that some of the torches had already been lit. Even though Dhampirs had heightened senses and could see relatively well in the dark, we preferred to keep the grounds lit to avoid any accidents.
