It smelled dank and musty, but that wasn’t different from any of his friends’ cellars and he never had the gripping nausea when at their homes. That was a mystery for another time, though. He needed to take care of his charge. Jon laid the towel down in a slightly grimy sink next to the washer and unwrapped the creature inside. It was a squirrel he had accidently run over with his Huffy on the way home from school. Its back legs were crushed and bent in weird angles. Its eyes fluttered open and shut, and the animal’s breathing came in rapid short breaths.

I rolled my eyes and went into the shop. “Good evening. How may I help you?” the bird behind the counter battered her eyes at me. “Here to pick up a cake. Should be under the name Templeton.” I said, ignoring the way she was looking at me. “Of course, be right back with that.” she smiled, taking another long look at me before ducking in the back of the shop.

She put her foot to the floor and got there in record time, if for no other reason than to get out of hearing range of the bubbly sex bomb in the backseat. "Hold on," Sebastian said as they pulled into the parking lot, which was empty except for one tow truck off near the closed garage doors. I can't tell if it's an excited bark or a 'get away from my cage' bark. Amongst the animals, I find cute little guinea pigs, hamsters, parrots squawking loudly at me, canaries and hedgehogs. On the other side, several aquariums hold tiny turtles floating lazily in the water, and quite a number of goldfish. When Dr. Connor is done, he informs me that I can start work the next day. I thank him and head back to the lobby. Jenny is back behind the counter, and she brightens up when she sees me.
