Her hair lifts off her shoulders in a calm, warm summer breeze that’s not my doing. The air feels lighter somehow. The clouds drift high overhead, revealing the first stars blinking into existence against a pale periwinkle sky. The sun drops below the horizon, casting its final rays in shades of crimson.

She grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. The snow fell in large, soft flakes in a silence that felt vast and grand. We walked side by side beneath the streetlights, the thick snow crunching underfoot. "Are you cold?" Amelia asked me. "No." I shook my head. Inside, my heart was warm. Suddenly, Amelia stopped and turned to face me. "Charlie," she said seriously, "there's something I've been wanting to tell you." I looked at her. Snowflakes fell on her hair, eyelashes, and shoulders. Her eyes sparkled, like they were filled with starlight.

Everyone who saw it, was shocked by the unusual event. "What's that?" asked one of the men in the car. "I don't know. It was like an explosion of light. Is that a UFO?” asked his partner.

Kael The city of Starfall shines in the haze of a late night rain shower. The rocky, barren landscape all around the sparkling city of onyx, obsidian, and silver glows under the lights of shops, taverns, and homes scattered around the city center and built into the mountains. Above, tucked in the clouds, my castle rests high above the sprawling metropolis, lost to the stars.

I exhaled, long and slow watching the flame flare up. Somewhere, she was walking toward the truth. And I, perhaps, toward her undoing. The wind shifted, whispering through the trees like a warning or a prayer. I whispered back, voice almost lost in the dark: “If she falls, let me fall beside her.” Then I mounted once more and rode into the night, following the faint pulse of destiny, into the hollow between stars.

In fiery nests, the phoenix lies, Ablaze with life, in burning sighs, It rises high, a blazing star, Reborn anew, from ashes far Hush, little one, the phoenix sings, A lullaby of fiery wings, In darkness, light begins to shine, At morning's warmth, our hearts entwine. Through mystic flames, the phoenix flies, A sign of hope, in endless skies, It soars on high, a radiant beam, Enlightening dreams, in slumber's theme.
